I am Kevin Dorival, and wear many hats: writer, mentor, inspirational speaker, historian, show host of The King Kevin Show, author of The Courage To Believe, and internet marketing consultant. February 7,1980 made me the second born king of five in Pompano Beach, Florida. My parents came to the United States from Haiti in 1978. However, my mother became the backbone of our close-knit family by raising me and my four siblings to understand the importance of God and an education, while instilling morals, honor and values with love. Growing up during the 1980s drug boom, my neighborhood was infested with drugs and crime, which encouraged me to spend most of my childhood in school, church and sports. I became a student athlete in middle school and continued up to my freshman year of college participating in sports such as, track and field and football.
My childhood was shaped and influenced by two people: my mother, Rosette Pierre and Ms. Wyche, my fifth grade teacher. I credit Ms. Wyche for teaching me how to tap into my intellectual power to gain success and earn a decent living in a world where the odds were against underprivileged young black children.
In 1999, I began my college education at the University of South Dakota where I also ran for the school’s track team. A year later, I attended Florida Atlantic University and graduated in 2005 with a major in political science and a minor in marketing. I wanted to major in history so I could educate students about their cultures as a teacher, however I knew my prior criminal record would hinder me from getting hired, and therefore I left it as an un-pursued passion.
At 21, I arrived at a point in my life where I wanted more. That desire and the lack of a male role model led him down a dark path of trouble. I realized that the need to change my surroundings was critical if I wanted to achieve the goals that I wanted to obtain in my life. In time, I turned over a new leaf.
As an activist, I protested at “Jena 6″ alongside 30,000 other protesters on September 20, 2007. In 2008, I was unable to participate in the Obama/McCain presidential election due to my previous incarceration. However, I sold Barack Obama t-shirts to support the nation’s first black president.
In the field of entertainment, I became known as, “One Man Army” promoting clubs and worked with top entertainers such as, J.T. Money, Ace Hood, Trina, and B.G. of Cash Money. Today, I retired from the industry, but remain a fan of the music. I developed an extensive career in promotions and marketing and used my experience to establish SkyView Marketing and the clothing lines, One Man Army and One Woman Army.
I enjoy mentoring and being a role model to young adults in need of guidance at the Knights of Pathagoras Mentoring Network in Delray, Florida. I hope by sharing my life lessons and experiences I can keep them from making the same mistakes I made. In South Florida, I’m considered a big brother to the young adults in the community. I follow up with them about their grades and goals and talks with their teachers. I always say, “One day, I’ll start a mentoring program to teach youth how to perceive themselves as royalty.” I believe that perception of oneself is essential in gaining confidence.
I spend much of my time volunteering at our church, Redeeming Word Christian Center International (RWCCI) in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. I am involved in several ministries such as, transportation ministry, college partners, welcome center and singles fellowship. At my Florida yacht (apartment, lol), I enjoy reading the Bible, business tycoons autobiographies, internet marketing and business books. My other hobbies include listening to classic R & B music, fine dining, fitness and watching animal and history documentaries.
I thank God everyday for giving me a second chance. I use my new life to encourage others to believe in their ability to reach their goals. I have been humbled by the trials and tribulations that I had to overcome in my past. I hope that through my testimony others will see there is light at the end of the tunnel and goodness will prevail.
